| Through the efforts of GWRRA Chapter VAD, Governor George F. Allen proclaimed May as "Motorcycle Awareness Month" in the Commonwealth of Virginia. At a ceremony in the state capitol attended by my wife, Kathy, and me representing our Chapter, Governor Allen accepted a GWRRA Certificate of Appreciation from our District Directors, David & Donna Huey, given in recognition of his continuing concern for motorcyclists' issues. When we also presented him with a GWRRA "Welcome Mat" from Chapter VAD, the Governor quipped, "The welcome mat is out for all motorcyclists who come to Virginia and see the beauty and history our state has to offer." When the Governor noticed my vest had pins from numerous states and provinces, but was missing one from Virginia (it had come loose from the vest while it was being carried on the motorcycle), he went to his desk, retrieved an official Commonwealth of Virginia lapel button and attached it to the vest. Virginia's Motorcycle Awareness Month program included billboards, radio and TV spots and newspaper ads, posters, bumper stickers and day-glo green antenna ribbons for extra attention. |
