Joe was born in Richmond in 1943. He was raised in Hanover County, VA. He worked as a transmission mechanic until February 1996 when he became employed as a forklift mechanic with the Food Lion Distribution Center in Dinwiddie County. Joe has a son from a previous marriage and a granddaughter and two of the cutest great-granddaughters.
Sheila was born at Ft. Lee, VA (an army brat) in 1950. She attended Thomas Dale High School and after graduation became employed with the Southland Life Insurance Company for 18 months. She then became employed with the Department of Motor Vehicles in the spring of 1971 and after 35 years says she is still having fun and doesn't plan to retire for a few more years or until work stops being fun.
Joe has ridden motorcycles for over half of his life. Long before he met and married Sheila he had owned such motorcycles as a Norton, a 1948 Harley Davidson with a suicide clutch, and several models of Hondas. Sheila on the other hand had never ridden or even sat on a motorcycle until mid-summer of 1975 when Joe purchased a Honda 350cc. After a close call and the decision to sell the 350, Sheila was secretly hoping that Joe had finally gotten the "thrill" out of his system and would not have the desire to purchase another motorcycle. This was not to be the case; in the summer of 1991 Joe came home with 1979 black 1000cc with a Vetter fairing. Needless to say, Sheila wasn't too keen on this "new" acquisition. However, it didn't take her long to begin feeling more comfortable and enjoy riding again. Within a few months of purchasing the 1000, Joe found a very nice 1986 1200cc Aspencade. Then in 1995, the 25th Anniversary Edition of the Gold Wings hit the market and the yearning began. So, with a smile from ear-to-ear, Joe purchased their current motorcycle a 1995 Aspencade which Joe triked in 2003.
Sheila "got the itch" in early 1996 and decided she want to ride her own bike. The motorcycle of choice for her was a Honda Helix. After scooting around the neighborhood for several weeks, Joe politely but firmly informed Sheila that if she didn't soon get her license that one of them would get a ticket for no license and it sure wasn't going to be him! So with a few sleepless nights and motorcycle manual in hand, Sheila successfully completed the required test and became licensed to operate a motorcycle. She has owned and sold several motorcycles since becoming licensed. However, she much prefers to be a co-rider on the trike.
In October 1991, they joined GWRRA as Charter members of Chapter U (Hanover) and it has been an adventure filled with many memories and opportunities. Being able to travel by motorcycle has enabled them to meet and make life-long friends from all over the USA, given them the "reason" to visit other states and tour the country.
Their first Rally in the Valley was in 1991 and they have attended every one since. They have attended 3 Wing Ding's and many, many District and Region Rallies over the past 15 years. While participating with Chapter U they became the telephone tree coordinators. After being in the Chapter U for a short period of time, they were appointed as Area Representatives for Chapter T that was located in Williamsburg. They served in this capacity for approximately 18 months and then began participating with a new Chapter out of Chester, Chapter W, which is now their home Chapter. After joining Chapter W, Joe and Sheila have held a variety of positions: ride coordinators, Ride Educator, Chapter Director (twice), Newsletter Editor, Chapter Couple, and District Couple, Rally Camping Coordinators. Over the years of riding, Joe and Sheila have traveled in 35 of the states and 2 provinces of Canada.
Joe and Sheila are both GWRRA Level III rider/co-rider certified and have successfully completed the Road Captains Course and the Trike Course. The GWRRA motto holds very true to their hearts because "Friends" are what makes their adventures "Fun" and in order to be "Safe" "Knowledge" is the key. Ride safe!
